I LOVE NY!

Aren't those beautiful spring flowers? The best thing about them is that they're in our own back yard!!!! Yippee!!! Our cats are still a bit annoyed with us that we were gone so long. Bertha refused to face me for a decent photo and Gus disappeared somewhere to do "manly" things. He seems to have finally forgiven me though as he's currently trying to stretch himself across the keyboard. In other words, it is time to sign off until our next trip.

Good travels to you wherever you go..

Flat out...

Terry, if you thought driving to Florida was mind numbing, you should try driving across flat Illinois & Indiana before those corn fields have been planted. That interminable book on Mark Twain begins to sound interesting.

Since we passed through Indiana you may be thinking the guy in the photo is Indiana Jones but that's actually my brother Jimmy, known to most folks as Jim. Although it's been a while since I've seen him, I still seem to be shorter than he is and I still seem to be his oldest older sister. And thank heavens he still has the patience of Job. I called him this morning to give him a couple of hours notice about what time to meet us at the restaurant. The GPS was right on target and we were even there a few minutes before we said we'd be there. It was only after we were on the road again and I was checking to see where we changed time zones that I realized we were already in the eastern zone and, in fact, had been an hour late meeting Jimmy. Now I've confessed all. And Jimmy's so nice he didn't mention it the whole time we were with him. I doubt (alright, I know) I could not have shown the same restraint!

Since today is the first day of spring it not only brings bunches of early flowers but also another birthday for Sarah. Happy birthday Sarah!!! Greetings from Ohio.

Bridges...

Missouri! Or rather two Arkansas gals next to a Texas guy, sitting together in Missouri. Jeannette & I graduated from high school together (I'm the one with the bare feet that are still longer than Jeannette's.) The handsome guy on the right is Jeannette's husband Don. Not only are they great hosts but they are conveniently located on the path back to NY.

So what does this have to do with bridges? Nothing. However, if you look at the photo below you'll see that we visited the wonderful new Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Who would have thought than Bentonville, Ark. would be a destination spot for anything other than Walmart headquarters. If you don't have it on your must visit list yet, make sure to add it!

Double trivia...

Where is Dwight D. Eisenhower's birthplace?
Who else was also born here?

Today we said goodbye to Mother & Becky & finally Texas. Then we nodded an hello and a goodbye to Oklahoma which caused us wonder if Oklahoma was known for any foods. (Marilyn & Jim - you'll have to bring us up to speed on that one. It can't be any worse or better than the "funeral casserole" we were served in Texas.) And finally here we are in Arkansas, Alma to be exact. That's pronounced Al (as in Al Pacino) ma but you have to pinch your nose shut as you're saying it to get just the right amount of nasal twang. To celebrate leaving Texas BBQ & Tex-Mex, we ate at the Catfish Hole ii where we had, what else, catfish with fixin's (onion, pickled green tomatoes, slaw, hush puppies). Pretty good.

Oh yes, the trivia answers...

One last look at Brady...

Thistles be gone! Mother doing her best to eliminate those pesky plants in her yard.

Charlie says "Howdy!"
And, yes, Charlie is his real name.

It's a wrap!

There we are - the B Team (the A Team was the first small group that was here before we arrived cutting all the lumber for us). We waited until the last day for a group photo (perhaps not an entirely good thing since some of our team had already worn their Habitat shirts this week - luckily there was a nice breeze this morning). Our team had folks from Texas, Louisiana, Ohio, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri & New York. Every year our teams just get better and this was no exception. It's been a real pleasure to work with them all.

The bottom two photos were at the end of today. We didn't quite get everything checked off our "to do list" but, on the other hand, we were able to leave something for the next group of 9 that starts on Monday and will work for 2 weeks and the final group of 20 that will spend 3 weeks doing all the finish work before the dedication. It's a wonderful thought that Julie, looking at the house in the bottom left photo, and her son Issac will have a nice new energy efficient home.

Getting close...

Only one more day and our team throws in our hammers and turns the project over to the next group.
Photo 1 - Getting the last pesky piece of siding on above the windows (no one dares comment on just how long it took to get it right - yes, we're not perfect every time).
2 - Some of us in our itty bitty siding mode.
3 - Laying down on the job (actually Bea was monitoring the meters for water leaks as per the new tests required by the inspectors).
4 - The 3 left standing who had just finished roofing the carport. We understand there was a bit of a sway and Jake starting turning a little green near the end.
Off to our "last supper" together as some of us leave tomorrow. It's being hosted by our team leader for the last couple of years who decided they liked Mason so much they bought a "winter" home here. (They're originally from Minnesota. Another couple on our team this year is also from Minnesota. Love those accents!)
PS - From yesterday for Joe - In addition to his engraving stuff, Jake also brings along all his fly fishing gear. He's caught so many sunfish and bass since we've been here, they must be weary of getting caught.

Engraving & Algebra

Jake, our next door Habitat Care-A-Vanner neighbor, had an open house last night to show us his engraving set up. Behind him is the frig & storage & the bath. Next to his set up is the kitchen and beyond that are the beds. (And I thought we crammed a lot into a small space!) If you're interested in seeing what he does, check out his web site http://jnewellart.com/index.html

Thought cousin John & Judy & their crew might like a little algebra lesson. I'm thinking a little Guerrilla Glue. And in case you were guessing it was me because of my dread of backing up - it wasn't...

We do work sometimes...

Thought you might like a little evidence that we've actually been doing some work. The metal came in (as did the screws) so all except the porch roof is now on. The window also came in so now all the windows are in. And the siding is going up an both one side and the bank. Suddenly it looks like progress again.

Meanwhile, daylight savings time means we have an extra hour of daylight for happy hour at the campground. This go around we even have our own barber/hair cutter as part of the crew (center back in the photo). Bea luckily got her haircut before Betty Jo had that second cocktail! (I suggested John might let her trim those few hairs from the top of his head but he still wants nothing to do with that.) Have to run... tonight is make your own tortilla during happy hour.

Finished just in time for lunch...

Just kidding but they did "twist" our arms to stop for lunch as we were invited to the home of one of the community's many Habitat supporters.  It really is a beautiful place overlooking Mason.  I thought you might be interested, Leigh, not only in the kitchen but the recessed, artfully painted ceiling over the counter.  Some of our crew dined (that's the only word to describe it) on the screened in patio while the rest of us dined in the dining room.  Even with our muddy shoes off at the door, we felt a little grubby next to the white tablecloths.  But, hey, we know when to buck up and take it in stride when we're being fed!

PS = the food was delicious too! (not to make you the least bit envious...)

Tanks...

Pleeze.... tanks is just not another way of pronouncing thanks. Tanks in Texas are what we in the northeast call ponds. This one in the middle of the golf course beside our campground is probably also known as a water hazard (at least we imagined some little white balls in the bottom). The building in the back, in case you can't make out the writing on the roof, is PUNCHERDOME. By the way, the Mason Punchers this year won their first ever state football championship. Not bad for a school with just over 200 students. Go Punchers!

Rain again?!

A second day of rain. If it wasn't that it's flat outside one might think we were back in NY. So we did what we might have done in NY - visit the library (makes you proud doesn't it Susan?). San Angelo has a wonderful new library downtown, well used today for sure. The photo shows part of the children's area. The bigger cut outs in the wall children use to crawl into and read. They're popular - I had to go to the far reaches to find holes without kids. (Don't want to violate any privacy issues after all.)

And, of course, that all works up an appetite. The restaurant we were at makes guacamole for you at your table. Fresh avocados are mashed by hand to the chunky stage. Then you decide what you want in it... tomato, jalapenos, onion, cilantro, lime. For any of you still looking for a new entrepreneurial endeavor, you might give it some thought.

My favorite sign of the day = "Laser and Tattoo Removal" (it's a bear finding a place to remove lasers...)

My favorite line in today's newspaper =
"According to a court document released Friday morning, Winchester's charge was 'murder intentionally causes death'".

Called...

Work was called today because of what is normally unthinkable in Texas - rain!  Lots of it with a fair amount of lightning thrown in to liven things up and bracing temps in the 30's.

John & I had to make a hard call...
stay in our van through the downpour or head to my mothers.  Suspect you guess which choice we made.

An update...

Work continues -
1 - The surgical team doing revitalization work on some rusty old poles that will hold up our homeowner's fence.
2 - View from under the carport. The metal roofing has yet to arrive but, with the wind the last few days, perhaps that's a lucky thing.
3 - View from the other side of soffit work. This was a real labor of love since the temp decided to drop from the mid 70's to about 50 in a couple of hours helped along by that good old Texas wind.
4 - The inside (as if you couldn't see that).

Midday we were invited to The Commercial Bank in town, not a bad thing to do on International Women's Day. This bank was the first started by a woman and the president is still a woman. She did have a bit of a problem yesterday. Someone who had imbibed a bit too much (not an easy thing to do in this "dry" town) tried to drive his pickup through the president's office just after she left for lunch. (If you'd like to try to comment on that one I changed the settings to see if some of you have better luck.)
PS - We were at the bank to see some of the best examples of flint spears ever found (they keep them in the vault) and to see Gene Zesch's folk art. The bank houses many of his originals and many of his bronzes (I couldn't pick out the wood ones from the bronze ones.) http://genezesch.com/

Here we have Mr. New York, Mr. Minnesota, Mr. Texas. (It's the cookie eating part of the contest.)

In response to the blog on entrophy, Auntie commented
"that you try 'ergodic process breakdown' as an antidote to entropy. Pfeh!"
Try looking that one up on Wikipedia if you really want to get confused.

The sign in the photo hangs on the fence surrounding the playground in the park. I think I know what vehicles are, but what defines livestock in Texas????

Bluebonnets to Turkeys...

In case you didn't identify the blue flowers in yesterday's blog, they're the first of this spring's famous Texas bluebonnets (not to be confused with Blue Bell, the state ice cream, although where they get the milk to make it is beyond me since I have yet to see any dairy cows in Texas).

Ready to represent their states in the Miss Bluebonnet contest, we have Ms. California, Ms. Illinois, & Ms. Missouri.
The guy hanging out window? Am not sure what he's trying to represent.

Believe it or not, Brady, TX, used to be the turkey capital of the world (imagine with this Texas heat they're more than happy they can no longer lay claim to that distinction). The photograph was taken in 1924 at their annual "Turkey Trot Parade". I particularly liked the outfits the women herders? (what would you call them?) wore but have yet to find any cast offs at the thrift store.

Assorted...

Work continues under clear skies.

The "young team" (the 4 youngest in our group) is doing the roof (a good indication that prayers ARE answered).

In the Brady newspaper the puzzles are found in the "Faith Section".

Terry is back in NY vowing to never drive/ride so far again, especially if grits are involved. NY weather has put an end to his cold.

1 Tall Texan & 4 Short Women

Left to right, that's me, my mother, Jessica (my nephew's wife), and Becky (my sister who got another year older today). None of us were born in Texas. The only true Texan in the bunch is the tall one in the middle, Scott. In case you hadn't figured it out, he's the tall one in the middle. Somehow he also managed to pose perfectly in front of the wind mill in Becky's yard giving him an added Native American flair. Scott is my nephew, my mother's grandson, husband to Jessica, & son to Becky. (He has to be tall to put up with all that.)

Other than celebrating Becky's birthday, John & I spent most of the morning dealing with entropy. Do you know what that word means? We didn't but I suspect Auntie Kathleen, who really should go on Jeopardy, knows. The photo below is a visual representation of entropy.

If you'd like that in words, Merriam-Webster defines it as a trend toward disorder. In a small space, such as our van, "trend" may be a bit too conservative a time estimate. It only took us 5 days to create the havoc pictured. However, after some concerted effort we are once again organized with everything in its place. By next Friday we'll probably once again be approaching that "ultimate state of inert uniformity".

It's FRIDAY!!!!!!!!

Did you ever have some weeks when you forget what day of the week it is? Trust me. That doesn't happen on a Habitat build. By Friday we're all counting down the hours until we can relax for the weekend.

The ladies crew is happy to report the windows we put in today went smoother than in any other builds we've done. In fact we were wishing the guys working on the rafters would hurry up and finish so we could get on with it. Their crew is more than happy to report all the rafters are now in place and roof work will begin in earnest next week. The bottom photo is the job site as we left it. (I just checked last year's blog and we're further ahead than we were at this time last year. Of course, the house is a little smaller so perhaps that has something to do with it.)

The other photo? The school treated us to lunch today with chili made by the students. It was delicious so, in spite of the sign on the door, I don't think we were an experiment.

Moving on up...

Just wanted to show you what's right next door to the Habitat house. Not one but two of those quaint water tower/smoke houses (no longer used). The building right beside them is a daycare that's also no longer used except... the owner is generously letting us use the building for shady brakes. It also means we have actual flush bathrooms!!! (Using a port-a-potty in Texas heat is an act of desperation!)

Top right, the first of the two ceiling beams over the living room/kitchen is being hoisted into place.

Bottom left - someone (imagine you can guess who) is willing to take an after lunch nap anywhere he can.

Bottom right - the local power company once again donated the use of their boom, plus the crew to operate it, to drop the trusses into place. No more pictures of that? You've seen one go up, you've seen them all. The wiser of the non-truss crew decided instead to shop the local thrift shops. (I've been looking for swim suits for us Susan, but have seen nary a one - too hot and dry for swimming I guess. However, I did manage to find a couple of things.)
